Social Emotional Training Level I: Promoting Children's Success

Description/Bio: This is the first in a four-day series of workshops based on the CSEFEL Modules. Participants will be able to describe the importance of building relationships with children, families, and colleagues; describe the relationship between children's social emotional development and challenging behavior; describe how challenging behavior serves as a function for children; and describe the relationship between environmental variables, children's challenging behaviors, and social emotional development. Participants will also learn strategies that can be used to build positive relationships with children, families, and colleagues; design environments, schedules, and routines; structure transitions; help children learn rules and routines; and plan activities that promote engagement.

Carol Weisheit has been an Early Childhood Resource Specialist with STARnet Regions I and III since 2002. She provides technical assistance and support to teachers of children birth to age eight, focusing primarily on children with special needs. She consults with agencies, schools, and programs on a variety of topics. Carol is adjunct faculty for Heartland Community College and is a certified High/Scope trainer. Carol holds a Bachelor's degree in Child Development and a Master's degree in Child and Family Studies. She is a former state director of Illinois CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), and consults with National CASA on a regular basis. Carol has directed child-care programs for lowincome families, coordinated and taught in an at-risk pre-k program, and served as a parent educator providing home visits to families at-risk.

This training will provide 6.0 hours for the following:

  • CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #3
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals

Full attendance is required to receive a certificate of participation.
