Description: Participants will...

  • learn about the process young children go through as they learn their second language;
  • discuss and explore the different stages of second language acquisition and how this process differs from first language acquisition;
  • learn what the most effective instructional strategies and assessment practices are to support dual language learners;
  • investigate how and why dual language children home language is an essential resource; and
  • discuss and learn ideas to help engage families of dual language learners.

Presenter Bios:Jayanti Tambe: Master Teacher, Director Permit, Department of Education, State of California Achievements/Awards. Was instrumental in Rainbow School being selected as one of the top ten NAEYC's Engaging Diverse Families (EDF) exemplary early childhood education programs. (EDF Project, NAEYC 2010). Presenter at the PACE 41st Annual Education Conference: Multicultural Storytelling. Recipient of Rose Engel Award (CAEYC -2010) for innovation in teaching practices. Presented at NAEYC Institute- Providence, Rhode Island, June 2011.

This training will provide 5 contact hours for the following:

  • CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
  • CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #2, #4, #7
  • CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
  • Gateways to Opportunity credit in area(s) C, D, F
