Building Bridges: The Transition Process from Early Intervention to Early Childhood

Description:This state-developed, standardized, and collaboratively-delivered training has been re-titled and revised in 2012 to provide more interaction.
Around the age of 2 1/2 years, children and their families using Part C Early Intervention services begin the transition process to determine if they are
eligible for Part C Early Childhood Special Education services by the age of three. Join those in early intervention; community care and education; early
childhood public education; and families of these children to explore this process of Transition. This training focuses on the requirements of the Individuals
with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA) and Illinois enactment to provide a smooth and effective transition for children and their families.
Elements of the process, such as transition meetings, responsibilities, timelines, state forms, and vital partnerships will be addressed.
Presenter Bios:Cindy Moore is currently the 0-3 Transition Coordinator for the Four Rivers Special Education District, covering 19 school districts in west
central Illinois. She has over 20 years of experience in Early Intervention, including Service Coordination and Developmental Therapy. She also was a
home-based teacher for Head Start. She has been providing trainings for Provider Connections, the Illinois Early Intervention Training Program and
STARNET for over 10 years. Cindy also serves as an Advisor for Child Development Associate candidates in daycare facilities.
Sandy Ginther left the medical field 28 years ago when her daughter was born with Down syndrome. She became active in endeavors related to children,
education, and disability. She has been employed with the state's Project CHOICES, directed an Early Intervention Program, served as an Early Intervention
Statewide Trainer, and is currently a Family and Early Childhood Resource Specialist with STARNET Regions I &anp; III. Sandy has a B.S. in Communication
from Illinois State University and graduate hours in Early Childhood from Western Illinois University, Portland State University and University of
Colorado. Trained in various early childhood approaches, she brings a family's experience to the content. In addition to presenting early childhood topics,
she frequently speaks on the need for an accepting society and the benefits of inclusive opportunities for all. Sandy has a long history of serving on boards,
task forces, and other volunteer entities.
Maria Matticks, RN, BSN has been a member of Early Intervention (EI) Training Program since 2003, providing training on a variety of topics related to EI.
First and foremost, she and her husband are parents of three children, including identical twin boys, one of which has cerebral palsy. Her family are products
of the early intervention process and are graced with a perspective and understanding that these unique families seek. It is not uncommon for her to include
the sibs in helping other families grow in their journey with special needs members. Maria has provided developmental therapy, parent liaison, nursing and
nutritional assessment, and assistive technology services to Early Intervention clients. Prior to this, Maria was employed by the Illinois Department of
Human Services Bureau of Early Intervention Services, where she was charged with policy review and development, as well as resolution of multiple issues
requiring medical expertise. She also served as the Assistive Technology Coordinator where she provided technical assistance on a wide range of topics to
CFC's, service providers, and their client families. Additionally, she served as a nursing consultant for an EI agency where she performed a variety of duties
including screenings, intakes, assessments, nursing and nutrition services as well as quality assurance duties. Maria is often a guest lecturer for EI, nursing
and education programs and frequently speaks with parent groups and other organizations in addition to operating a separate business providing
incontinence supplies to qualifying children and adults with special needs.
This training will provide 5 contact hours for the following:
- CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
- CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #6
- CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
- Gateways to Opportunity credit in area(s) G
- EI Credit in the area of Families
Full attendance is required to receive a certificate.
