Prerequisite training: Social Emotional Training Level I: Promoting Children's Success and Social Emotional Training Level II: Teaching Strategies
Description/Bio: Participants will understand the difference between Positive Behavior Support (PBS) and traditional discipline approaches; define forms and
function of communication and identify the behavioral mechanisms that contribute to viewing challenging behavior; use interview and
observation data to determine the communicative function of challenging behavior and develop hypothesis; identify the steps of the process of
PBS; describe and select strategies that may be used to prevent challenging behavior; identify replacement skills that may be taught to
replace challenging behavior; identify how to respond in a way that does not maintain or reinforce challenging behavior; and develop a
behavior support plan, as a team, for a child case study.
Carol Weisheit is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist with Illinois STARNET, a federal project funded through the Illinois State Board of
Education. As an Early Childhood Specialist, Carol provides technical assistance and support to teachers who work with children birth to age
eight, focusing primarily on children with special needs. Carol is a former state director of Illinois CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates),
serves on the National CASA Curriculum Advisory Committee, and is a trainer for National CASA. Carol has directed child-care programs for
low-income families, coordinated and taught in an at-risk prekindergarten program, and served as a parent educator providing home visits to
families at-risk. She has a Bachelor's degree in child development and a Master's Degree in child and family studies. Carol also consults with
agencies and programs on a variety of topics. She is a certified High/Scope teacher and trainer. In her spare time, Carol volunteers for the
Make a Wish Foundation, granting wishes to children with life threatening illnesses.
This training will provide 12.0 hours for the following:
- CPDUs (Continuing Professional Development Units) for teacher certification
- CDA (Child Development Associate) credit in area(s) #3
- CE credit for SLP, SW, LCPC, PT, and OT professionals
Full attendance is required to receive a certificate of participation.
