Description: As teachers of young children, we have an opportunity to entice our students' curiosity. That genuine wonder about each new experience
is the foundation for learning. In this workshop, we will explore avenues for sparking intrigue in young children. Come prepared to experience learning in a new way.
Presenter Bios: Sherial McKinney, M.S. Ed., is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist for STARnet Regions I and III. She has taught and worked in the
field of early childhood education for over 35 years. Sherial has taught Early Childhood Special Education in a self-contained setting and in a blended program with students
enrolled in the Pre-K at Risk program. She has also taught Kindergarten, Title I Reading and Math for grades K-8, and in a federally funded child care program. Sherial has
provided staff development and training opportunities for teachers, support staff, administrators and family members at a variety of local, regional, and national conferences.
Connie Shugart, Project Coordinator STARNET Regions I & III, has over 30 years of experience working in the field of early childhood education. Her
experiences include teaching and/or training of early childhood and early intervention professionals and families. She has done presentations at many regional, state and
national conferences. A few of her topics include curriculum, assessment, standards, environments, child development, and play. Connie is also one of the Executive
Producers and hosts of Apples Magazine training videos. Her passions include educating professionals and families on play and the impact that the early childhood
environment has on teaching and learning.
Mindy Ely is an Early Childhood Resource Specialist with STARnet Regions I & III. She received her BS. Ed. from
Illinois State University with an endorsement in the area of visual impairments in 1993. Mrs. Ely began her career as a Teacher for the Visually Impaired and then as a
Developmental Therapist for Vision. Later she worked as the Vision Specialist with Hearing and Vision Connections where she planned and provided training and technical
assistance to families and professionals on issues related to blindness. Mindy has served on the Illinois Vision Leadership Council since 2001 and the International Blind
Preschool Summit Group since 2006. She was a board member-at-large and then president of the Illinois chapter of the Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of
the Blind and Visually Impaired (AER). She currently serves on the National AER board. In 2012 she was honored with IAER's Distinguished Service Award and the
American Foundation for the Blind's Spungin Fellowship. Mindy was recognized as an Honored ISU Alumni in 2008 for her contributions to the field of Special Education.
She served on the ISU Department of Special Education Board in 1998, 2009, and 2010. Considered one of Illinois' leading experts in early childhood and vision loss, Mindy
has become a sought after speaker and consultant.
