Disability Resource Center

Frequently Asked Questions

I’m experiencing some academic difficulties, and I think I may have a disability. What should I do?

If you think you have a disability, we would be happy to talk with you about your concerns. Please call SDSC Disability Resources at 309-298-1884, or send us an email at disability@wiu.edu. We will set up an appointment and talk about the current issues, discuss campus resources that can provide evaluations for students, and decide together what the best course of action would be.

What kind of documentation do I need to provide?

You may have questions about what kind of documentation you need to provide as you go through this process. Please know that you are the best source of information about your experiences; it is imperative that we hear from you what your experience and accommodation history has been. If we need documentation of any kind, we will, in most cases, use documentation that you already have. In some cases, students may be referred to a campus resource for an evaluation, but Disability Resources staff will work with you to ensure that appropriate accommodations are in place while the evaluation is taking place.

I’ve submitted all of my information to SDSC. What happens next?

It’s time to schedule your Welcome appointment! Please call 309-298-1884 or email disability@wiu.edu to schedule this appointment. If you are currently enrolled in courses at WIU, you can schedule a Welcome appointment at anytime during the semester, with the exception of final exam week. During your Welcome appointment, we will discuss services, accommodations, and documentation, Disability Resources procedures for arranging accommodations, and how to best work with faculty members.

Once I’m registered with SDSC Disability Resources, how do I request accommodations from my instructors?

Every semester, you will complete Faculty Notification through STARS.  We strongly suggest you then talk with your professors about how they will provide your accommodations.  The best way to do this is to meet with your instructors during office hours or by appointment, so that a meaningful, one-on-one discussion can occur.

**Please note that accommodations are not retroactive; it is important for students to make requests in a timely manner, so that we can plan accordingly.
