The Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center works diligently to provide a nurturing and supportive climate that reinforces the academic and social development of African American students at Western Illinois University. The African American Achievement Awards, which is now in its 9th year, recognizes the contributions of African American students, academic achievement, and student organizations.

We hope that you will take the time to review the award packets and acknowledge the contribution of individuals and student organizations with your nominations. Act today, don't delay! Please return all complete application packets along with all required supporting documentation and letters to the Gwendolyn Brooks Cultural Center by 3:00 pm on Friday, April 6, 2012. Please note ONLY complete applications with supported documentation will be reviewed.

Selection Process

The Selection Committee will consist of students, faculty, staff, and administrators. The Committee will review all nominations and completed application packets.

All awards applicants/nominees must fill out the awards applications checking the items for which they are applying. Please use one application per award. The application form must be completed and signed by the appropriate persons. A typewritten explanation of why this person/organization should receive this award should be completed separately on 8½ by 11 standard white paper. Please follow the appropriate instructions for each award. Only double-spaced typewritten pages will be accepted. Please try to limit to one (1) page. Applicants are strongly encouraged to enclose supporting documentation with each application.

All application materials must be completed and submitted together. A complete application packet includes an application form with proper signatures, typewritten letter of support and/or recommendation, and any supporting documents (if necessary). The completed and signed application form should be the first page. Incomplete and unsigned forms will be not accepted or considered in the selection process.

General criteria for nominees and award recipients:

  1. Currently enrolled full-time Western Illinois University.
  2. Student organizations in good standing with the Office of Student Activities.
  3. ONLY programs and activities which occurred in either the Spring 2011 or Fall 2011 semesters will be considered.
