Intercollegiate Athletics
Student-athletes at Western Illinois University continually raise the bar– academically, athletically, and in their commitment to personal and social responsibility. Academically, Leatherneck student-athletes have consistently outperformed the general student body in terms of GPA and graduation rates. Western's student-athletes proudly boast of a cumulative 3.00+ GPA. Socially, the Leathernecks are proud to serve the community, typically volunteering approximately 2,000 hours of community service and generally raising over $12-15,000 annually for local, and regional charities. The Fighting Leathernecks are very competitive on the playing field as well, winning 28 conference championships, with 10 NCAA post-season tournament appearances, 24 Coach of the Year honorees, and over 600 All-Conference honorees since 2002.
A charter member of both the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the Summit League, Western Illinois University sponsors a broad-based 20-sport intercollegiate varsity athletics program serving more than 500 student-athletes. Ten men's sports and 10 women's sports are offered including football, basketball, volleyball, baseball, soccer, swimming and diving, track and field, golf, softball, cross country and tennis. Competing at the NCAA Division I level, the most elite collegiate level, Western Illinois University strives to graduate student-athletes, win conference championships and advance to NCAA postseason tournaments.
Financial aid is available in all intercollegiate sports. Undergraduate students who are interested in participating in intercollegiate athletics should contact the respective sport's coach by calling (309) 298-1964.
