Student Legal Services (SLS)
Student Legal Services (SLS) is a professional legal office available to all students of WIU without charging a fee for services. A licensed, practicing attorney can represent individuals charged with traffic violations and misdemeanor offenses in McDonough County Court. Persons facing felony charges will be referred to other types of legal assistance.
SLS can also assist students with landlord/tenant issues, city ordinance violations, consumer problems, or questions about other types of legal problems. SLS does not represent the University in cases against students or students wishing to pursue a case against the University. Since SLS is here for all students, it is not permitted to represent one student against another. In those types of circumstances, the attorney can give advice to each side in a dispute, or attempt to bring both sides together and mediate a solution. The attorney reserves the right to determine whether or not to accept a client on a case-by-case basis.
Individuals seeking assistance may come to the office for the first time on a walk-in basis. Please bring documents pertaining to the case. An initial interview is done to create a file for each case. If necessary, an appointment is then made to speak personally with the attorney.
Confidentiality is of the utmost importance, and the attorney/client relationship is respected at all times. At the time of the first interview, the student will be asked to sign a retainer agreement with SLS. No one from Student Legal Services will inform parents or guardians about anything discussed here. If a parent or guardian wishes to call and speak to a representative of SLS about their son or daughter, SLS must have written permission of the student.
