Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR)

Summer Orientation and Registration (SOAR) is a mandatory program for all incoming freshman students. Throughout the two-day program, you will learn everything you need to know to be successful in your first year at Western Illinois University. Presentations, small-group discussions, academic advising, and class registration will help you enter WIU informed and confident. We have several program dates to choose from and look forward to seeing you on campus to take your next step toward becoming a Leatherneck!

How To Register for SOAR

After you have been accepted, log onto your STARS account and select "New Student Registration Reservation." You will see all available open dates and receive immediate confirmation of the program you have selected.

Tentative Summer Orientation Schedule

Program Overview for Student and Family/Guest
  • Students are required to stay overnight in the residence hall and will be paired with another new student.
  • Families/guests have an option of staying overnight in the residence hall or making their own arrangements to stay off campus. Families will be assigned to their own room. See the Fees page for details.
  • Check-in for all participants will begin at 11:30am in Corbin-Olson residence hall, 410 N. Western Ave.
  • Program check-in will begin at 12:30pm in the University Union.
  • Program will end on day two around 12pm
  • Dinner on day one and breakfast on day two are provided.
  • Lunch on day one is on your own and participants should plan to eat prior to check-in. Lunch will be available in Corbin-Olson Dining Center. It is cash only.

  • Take WIU ID card photo 
  • Experience life in a residence hall 
  • Interact with other students

Family/Guest Highlights

  • Become familiar with academic and advising processes
  • Attend family orientation sessions
  • Learn about how to adjust to common transition issues faced by students and families
  • Gather information about campus resources and services
  • Meet other family members and share common experiences
