AP Courses & Equivalencies
Western Illinois participates in the Advanced Placement (AP) program sponsored by College Board. The AP program is a cooperative education endeavor of secondary schools and universities. Through AP courses, high-school students engage in university-level study where they participate in classes that are more rigorous than most other high school offerings. In AP classes, students acquire skills that help them succeed academically. Successful students may earn university credits, advanced placement, or both.
There are 37 courses and exams across 22 subject areas that students may participate in as high school students. These courses help prepare high school students for college through earning college credit while in high school, improvement of writing skills, sharpening of problem solving skills, and development of the study habits necessary for the rigors of college.
Completion of AP course work may help a student stand out during the admissions process. When a student enrolls in AP courses they are demonstrating a readiness for college level work, a willingness to push themselves academically, and showing a commitment to academic excellence.
Students can receive up to a maxium of 30 semester hours of credit for graduation from military, external testing, or any combination thereof. This includes but is not limited to AP, College Board, CEEB, CLEP, DANTES, AARTS, SMARTS.
