Military Appreciation Week
November 7 - 14, 2014
November 7 – 21, 2014 – Expressions of Appreciation - All University departments and student organizations are encouraged to submit notes and cards of appreciation to our veterans and service men and women. These cards, which may include holiday greetings or thank-you notes, will be distributed to Veterans Administration homes and hospitals. Cards and notes of appreciation may be completed and submitted to the Veterans Resource Center no later than November 21, 2014.
November 7 – 28, 2014 – Fallen Soldiers Scholarship - Applications are being accepted for the spring 2015 term. For eligibility guidelines or to apply, visit wiu.edu/veterans. The deadline to submit application materials is November 28, 2014.
Friday, November 7, 2014 – The WQPT Military Workforce Symposium - Service members, veterans and military spouses will have the opportunity to learn about employment, education, and training within the community. The program will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Western Illinois University Quad Cities Campus, Moline, IL.
Saturday, November 8, 2014 – WIU Wind Ensemble Veterans’ Concert - The concert will be held at the COFAC Recital Hall at 3:00 p.m.
Monday – Friday, November 10 – 14, 2014 – Salute to Women in the Military - Annual display sponsored by the Women’s Center. The display is available from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Friday.
Monday – Friday, November 10 – 14, 2014 - Worn Flags will be retired by ROTC Cadets. Flags can dropped off at the Military Science Department, Horrabin Hall 103; the Veterans Resource Center, 333 North Ward Street, Macomb; or the American Legion Post 6 at 221 East Washington Street.
Monday – Friday, November 10 – 14, 2014 – Harry Mussatto Golf Course -Veterans and service members will receive free green fees with the rental of a golf cart. Also, on Veterans Day, veterans and service members will receive a 25% discount off merchandise. Present your military ID between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Monday & Wednesday, November 10 & 12, 2014 – Yellow Ribbon Campaign - The WIU Vets Club and OASIS will be passing out yellow ribbons in support of our troops. Ribbons will be available from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the University Union concourse. Event will end early each day if ribbons run out, so don’t wait! Yellow ribbons will also be available at the National Roll Call Event on Tuesday.
Monday, November 10, 2014 – Veterans Resources 101 - Have you been curious about the difference between a veteran, reservist, or guard member and their related obligations? Would you like to know more about the benefits; financing; and healthcare, community, and personal resources available to our service men and women? The Veterans Resource Center will provide an overview to acquaint audience members so they will be better prepared to help veterans and service members succeed. The program will take place at 1:00 p.m. at the Multicultural Center Multipurpose Room.

University Union Bookstore - Veterans and service members will receive a 20% discount off all clothing and gift items. Present your military ID between the hours of 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WIU-QC Riverfront Campus - Salute to Veterans Appreciation Breakfast will be held in conference rooms 103 and 104 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The breakfast is for veterans and service members, plus one guest. A visual slideshow presentation recognizing student veterans will be shown during the breakfast.
VFW Veterans Day Ceremony - The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. at 1200 E. Jefferson Street, Macomb. There will be free soup and sandwiches, courtesy of the Ladies Auxiliary. This event is open to the public. Firing squad will be at 11:00 a.m. Flags will be displayed around Chandler Park.
Veterans and Service Members Tribute Ceremony - Western Illinois University Macomb Campus will conduct a tribute ceremony at 11:00 a.m. at the Sherman Hall flagpole. Join President Jack Thomas, WIU's Army ROTC Color Guard, Veterans Club President Lukas Smith, Board of Trustees member Michael Quigley, music education major Alison Huntley, Vice President for Student Services Gary Biller, and School of Music Professor Bruce Briney as they lead a ceremony to recognize all veterans and service men and women. In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the Sherman Hall Auditorium, third floor.
America’s White Table Display - Knoblauch Café, 239 Knoblauch Hall, will display a symbol for and remembrance to fallen, missing, and captive service members. Lunch is available from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Meals are $7.00 per person and will include a dessert and beverage. Call 309-298-1085 to make a reservation. Carry-outs are also available.
Sherman Hall Bell Tower - A medley of anthems will be played at 12:00 p.m. as a tribute to each of our military branches.
National Roll Call 2014 Project - Students, staff, faculty, and community members will volunteer to honor those who have served and are serving, as well as the fallen. Names of veterans and service members will be read aloud beginning at 12:00 p.m. on the University Union plaza. American Legion Post 6 Veterans Day Dinner - Dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. and is free of charge for paid members of the Legion, 221 E. Washington Street, Macomb. There will also be a brief program.
Wednesday, November 12, 2014 – Veterans Voices ~ Personal Stories of Combat and Peace - Announcing a new campaign to introduce an innovative writing and publication project for veterans and service members. The open house will be held in the University Art Gallery from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. All interested veterans and service members are invited to stop in to learn more about this exciting new venture, cosponsored by the English and Journalism Department and the Veterans Resource Center. Light refreshments will be available.
Thursday, November 13, 2014 – Ask a Vet Panel Discussion - Join a discussion group made up of a diverse group of student veterans and service members. They will address questions submitted by students, faculty and staff. Panelists will also share their personal stories. This program will be held in the Multicultural Center Multipurpose Room from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
