GRADUATE ASSISTANTSHIP

Campus Recreation at Western Illinois University offers graduate assistantships to WIU graduate students. The opportunity to pursue a Master's degree in a strong academic program, combined with the practical learning experience of a graduate assistantship, provides applicants with a comprehensive graduate education. Graduate degree programs, which would be enhanced by an assistantship in Campus Recreation, include the following:

Graduate Assistantship Opportunities

All graduate assistants will work a minimum of 20 hours per week, which could include weekends. Customizing and combining positions to meet your personal goals is common. Early application for optimal consideration is strongly encouraged.

Facility Management 

The Facility Management Graduate Assistant oversees various operations of the Spencer Student Recreation Center and performs duties associated within the facility. Responsibilities include providing exceptional customer service, utilizing conflict resolution skills, responding to injuries, supervising students, implementing risk management procedures, enforcing policies, hiring and training student employees, and assisting with facility management and scheduling.

Fitness Services 

The Fitness Services Graduate Assistant coordinates the fitness sessions including the hiring, training, evaluating, and scheduling of instructors/trainers as well as scheduling and supervising both the weight room/Olympic Strength rooms. Other responsibilities include preparing and administering in-services, teaching fitness instructor/personal training courses, teaching group fitness classes, and providing students and staff with healthy lifestyle information. Background in Exercise Science, Health Wellness, Nutrition, or Strength and Conditioning preferred.

Intramural Sports/Sport Clubs 

The Intramural Sports/ Sport Clubs Graduate Assistant plans, organizes, administers, and evaluates over 30 intramural events, assists in the recruitment, training, scheduling, supervising, and evaluating officials and supervisors for assigned intramural sport activities. The Graduate Assistant will also assist with the coordination of all aspects of the Intramural Sports program. Other opportunities include supervision of intramural activities, marketing/promotion, University relations, and student development. Officiating experience preferred. This Graduate Assistant oversees all components of the sport clubs program. and meets with club presidents and is responsible for ensuring all sport clubs are in compliance with Campus Recreation. Responsibilities include scheduling monthly meetings with sport club presidents, depositing club funds, coordinating travel arrangements, and marketing and promoting sport club events. Excellent time management and multitasking skills are needed. 

Graduate Assistantship Requirements

Candidates must have completed requirements for a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited higher education institution and have been regularly accepted into a graduate degree program at Western Illinois University. A 3.0 GPA or higher is preferred. Additionally, candidates must have an assistantship application, a statement of personal goals, and three recommendation letters on file with the School of Graduate Studies. Desired qualities include previous experience with activity/event programming and/or leadership development, strong interpersonal and communications skills, and a sincere interest in assisting students’ growth and development.

Compensation

Full-time Graduate Assistants receive a $943 stipend per month for eight months plus a tuition waiver for the fall semester, spring semester, and summer term.

  4. Complete an Application for Graduate Assistantship , if not already submitted with your admissions application, and submit to the School of Graduate Studies.
  5. Complete the Campus Recreation Graduate Assistantship Application to apply for an assistantship in Campus Recreation; submit to the Campus Recreation Graduate Coordinator.
  6. Submit your cover letter and resume to the Campus Recreation Graduate Coordinator.
  7. Submit a Request to have Documents Sent to Department to the Campus Recreation Graduate Coordinator. Complete the form with the following information:
