Specialty camps will include master classes, individual lessons, chamber music, solo coaching, reed work for oboe and bassoon, and embouchure development with WIU’s renown faculty. String specialty camps will also include sessions on All-State audition music and bow and left hand technique classes. Specialty Camps


There will be opportunities for students to perform during the camps. Students should bring at least one prepared piece.

The specialty camps are followed immediately by the Senior High Concert Band Camp and Senior High Orchestra Camp.

There is a special rate reduction of $125 off the cost of the two camps for those students electing to remain through the Senior High Concert Band Camp or Senior High Orchestra Camp.

The Steel Drum Specialty Camp, under the direction of Dr. Rick Kurasz, Associate Professor of Music, will provide a "hands-on" playing experience in a steel drum ensemble. Sessions will include basic steel drum technique and sound production, history and evolution of the steel drum, but the majority of the camp will be spent in full ensemble rehearsal. No previous steel drum experience is necessary and instruments are provided by Western Illinois University. Students with previous experience and/or those who own their own instruments are welcome as well. All students MUST BE ABLE TO READ STANDARD MUSICAL NOTATION.
