| Susan Docherty (MacArthur ECE Program)
and her children have been studying and exploring winter and snow.
As seen in the photographs, the children also painted snow that filled the sensory table. Notice the mittens. They also worked on a group snowman collage displayed on the bulletin board.
One day they made "snow ice cream." Here is the recipe Susan used:
1 can of evaporated milk 1 cup of sugar 6 tbsp. of vanilla Mix all ingredients with a mixer until itís the consistency of ice cream. Eat! Yum!!! |
Jo Sorenson (Garfield
School, Monmouth) and the children in her classroom have been busy investigating
the qualities of wood the last nine weeks. They went on a walk to look
at trees, so they would know where wood comes from. They collected twigs
along the way and created pictures by gluing them when back in the classroom.
Later they toured their school to find things made out of wood. They found
that there was a lot. As a Christmas holiday project, the children made
wooden paper towel holders for their parents. They had to measure, saw,
sand, screw, and nail to make them. When finished the paper towel holders
were painted and varnished. Jo says, "They were beautiful!"
As an inclusion activity related to the wood project, students from Kindergarten and first grade joined the class in making holiday ornaments from sawed wooden disks. Children glued their photograph on some and then decorated them with fabric paints. Some of these were given to parents and others were taken to a nursing home to share with the older folks there. Currently the children are learning about toys during language arts and they are making their own toy creations out of wood. Jo says, "This has really been a fun unit!" |

| Denita Clover (Colchester Preschool) and her children invited
parents to an open house. Centers were set up in the classroom so children
and parents could do many activities together. Denita then gave each parent
a take home bag with books, art materials, and activity ideas. Children
and parents can use the materials and return the bag in one week. They
then can check out another bag. Children's paintings were displayed so
children could proudly show their parents and tell them how they were done.
The paintings were done after reading the story of Elmo in the Snow. Bird
seed was mixed with white tempera paint and the children painted on bright
blue paper. When the "snow" was dry, they glued on squares of colored tissue
paper to look like Elmo the elephant. Denita said, "I heard lots of good
language as the children were making their own Elmer playing in the snow."
