When I was a child, I loved the smell of a new box of crayons, squeezing clay between my fingers, and watching as puddles of paint ran together to make new colors. As an adult, after art school and introducing my children to these sensory pleasures, I love finding ways for young children with disabilities to communicate through the expressive arts.

I have been with Macomb Projects since 1986. When I was a child in kindergarten I can still remember my favorite center. It was the painting room! I got to wear an old shirt, dip my brush into a variety of paints, smell the paint, and use an easel to paint my picture. My mother encouraged my brothers and me to draw, color, or create art most of the time. Each year I took an art class during high school. During two summers of high school, I commuted to Chicago to take art classes from the Art Institute of Chicago. In college my minor was Art. Today my art interest includes porcelain dolls. My mother is an original porcelain doll artist. I believe the expressive arts are important for all young children and technology is another tool to assist young children in creating their own symbols.
