|
| FAQ: |
I am using Windows 95's version of KidDesk, and my icons are turning black in KidDesk. What is wrong? |
| Answer: |
First check the version of your KidDesk. It needs to be v1.2, v1.25 or v1.26. If it is, then you will need to download a patch for KidDesk which can be found at the following URL http://www.edmark.com/ts/pctech/kdfe15patch.html. If you do not have Internet access, then call KidDesk at (800) 691-2986 and ask them to send you a patch. After receiving the patch, install it on your computer according to the directions given. |
| FAQ: |
My printer icon is not showing as an option in the different activities in KidDesk. |
| Answer: |
You are in the Guest mode. As soon as you add an icon for yourself or a child, you will have the printer option available. |
| FAQ: |
I have heard that there is a new KidDesk available. What makes it different from KidDesk Family Edition? |
| Answer: |
There is a new KidDesk called KidDesk Internet Safe. This version is only available for Windows 95 machines at this time. The main purpose of this KidDesk is to protect children from the Internet. Teachers can set up KidDesk so children will only be able to access the teacher chosen sites. You must use Internet Explorer as your Internet browser while accessing web site through KidDesk Internet Safe. Listed below are some of the changes that have occurred with KidDesk Internet Safe.
- The icons are different. They are more "cartoony" in looks and darker in color.
- Three desktop accessories have been dropped: the notepad, the rolodex, and the calculator.
- Adding and removing programs is different, but is similar to how programs are added on Windows 95.
Our opinion is that if you are not using the Internet and are not planning to in the near future, then purchase KidDesk Family Edition. If you plan to use the Internet with your students then you will have to weigh the pros and cons of which program to choose. For more information on KidDesk Internet Safe, see www.edmark.com/prod/kdis/.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Edmark is not supporting KidDesk Family Edition for Windows 98. Some computers that have Windows 98 experience difficulties running the Family Edition version. |
FAQ: |

Computer Environment
| FAQ: |
Can I plug more than one set of headphones into my computer? |
| Answer: |
Yes. You can use the same set up as you do at your listening center. Some things to think about before trying this would be:
- Even though more than one child is listening to what the computer is saying, are the children able to increase their social skills by interacting with other children?
- Are children talking to one another about what is happening on the software program? This is important to help increase their oral communication and vocabulary.
- How high is the sound on the computer? Remember that children's ears are sensitive.
|
| FAQ: |
How do I facilitate the computer center if I have a free choice time and small group time? |
| Answer: |
There are a number of ways you can approach this.
- Use the same sign up sheet for both times.
- Use a sign up sheet for the free choice time and choose the children for small group time.
- Assign one child to the computer at small group time and allow them to choose who they would like to work with.
|
| FAQ: |
Should I limit the time children use the computer? I have 15 students in my classroom, how do I ensure that they all get a turn? |
| Answer: |
We do not encourage limiting the time a child spends on the computer. Limiting time will often create anger or frustration with certain children. By allowing the child to decide when he or she is done for the day how give the child control over his or her actions. By using one of the methods listed in the above FAQ, or something similar, children are usually satisfied with waiting, as long as they know they will get a turn sometime. |
| FAQ: |
The children in my classroom want to put the CDs in the computer and take them out all by themselves. Won't this hurt the CDs? |
| Answer: |
CDs are very durable. By demonstrating to the children how to be careful with the CDs, it is appropriate to allow the children to handle the CDs themselves. |
