Warning About "Ransomware"

Posted December 15, 2015

The state of Illinois has seen a recent rise in the number of Ransomware malware incidents in the past few weeks. Ransomware is a malicious computer program that can encrypt or otherwise block access to your files until a sum of money is paid. Ransomware infections result in significant costs due to required remediation efforts and a loss of user productivity.  In some cases, the files infected can not be recovered.

The attack vector of the recent Ransomware incidents is EMAIL. Some of the emails reference a Resume, which is an attachment.

We want to remind university employees and students to be very vigilant in their review of emails, and to NEVER click on an attachment unless they can verify the authenticity of the sender and the true business need.

If you receive an email that references a Resume with an attachment, we ask that you please DO NOT OPEN THE ATTACHMENT and forward the email to the uTech Support Center at support@wiu.edu.

Please take this time to view a reminder and guidance regarding Phishing scams. We request you share this information with others in your department or class to help prevent additional loss due to Ransomware and other malware threats.
