Connecting Your Computer to the Internet
-
To Connect to the Internet, all halls and university apartments require
a 10/100 Network
Interface Card, AND an Ethernet Cable
-
10/100 Network Card
(Pictured below, left, usually is provided with new computers.)
If your computer does not have an Ethernet card, you will need to purchase one (available at most large retail stores (Wal-mart, K-Mart, etc.) -
an Ethernet cable
(below right.)
You will will need to provide the Ethernet cable (also available at large retail stores.)
-
10/100 Network Card
-
How do I connect my computer to the Internet in the halls?
- Once you have your 10/100 Network Interface Card and Ethernet cable, plug one end of the cable into the wall Ethernet port and the other into your computer. See the diagram below.
-
If there are two or more computers in the room, you will need to purchase a hub or switch (right) since residence hall rooms have only a single Ethernet wall port. Then you can connect the hub/switch directly to the Ethernet wall port with one Ethernet cable,
and connect each computer to the hub/switch with additional Ethernet
cables. See the diagram below.
-
I am moving into the halls soon. What if I need help?
- ResNet technicians will be working during move-in. Please refer to your Orientation pamphlet for dates and times.
- Call the uTech Support Center at (309) 298-2704 if you have questions or if you are having any problems connecting to the university network.
Protecting You Computer & Information from Spyware/Viruses
-
I am having a lot of popup's and my computer is slow, what's wrong with my computer?;
- The problem you are having is spyware. Spyware are programs designed to watch where you go on the Internet, and to aggressively advertise by forcing unwanted windows to popup on your computer. To eliminate the problem you must have your computer updated AND you need to scan once every two weeks by programs such as Ad-Aware, Spybot, or Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta. These software programs can be found in our ResNet software section.
- For more help, please call the uTech Support Center at (309) 298-2704.
-
I want to protect myself against viruses, what
software should I use?
- Western Illinois University now offers free Symantec Anti-Virus for our students. To install, please go here.
- We recommend that you scan with Symantec Anti-Virus once a week, and always have the latest live-updates.
-
I think I have a virus, how do I remove it?
- Some viruses can be removed just by having Anti-Virus software installed. Some, more complex viruses need other tools to remove them. If you would like to remove the virus yourself a good place to start is searching Symantec's site.
- If you would like, you can call the uTech Support Center at (309) 298-2704 and request that a ResNet technician come to your room and remove any computer viruses you have.
- If you think you have a virus, and need extra help, please call the uTech Support Center at (309) 298-2704.
