Math 100 Calculator Help

The Math Department offers online calculator help. Graphing options and a calcuator menu is included for the TI-83/TI-83Plus, TI-82, and TI-89.

Math Placement

The Mathematics Department will do an initial placement into math courses using a student's math ACT score and the math courses completed in high school as guidelines. The department may recommend that a student take the math placement test (COMPASS) to improve the placement level. SWELL - Student Workshops for Excellence in Learning and Life

These brief and helpful online workshops are specifically geared towards assisting students in becoming successful in their academic pursuits at Western Illinois University. There are four workshops available.

Study Skills

There are many resources provided by the University to help students with study skills. The University Counseling Center (UCC) provides programs each semester that focus on different strategies to help students prepare (pdf) for their classes. Topics such as time management, test taking, note taking, and more are covered. Contact their office at 309/298-2453. The University of Chicago has a great resource center with a virtual pamphlet collection on study skills. Additional resources can be found at How to Study website.

Tutoring

Most of the tutoring offered on campus is in a group tutoring format. There are some departments that will offer individualized services. Tutoring offered through the Office of Academic Services is in a group setting. Here is a list of areas in which tutoring is offered. Please note that tutoring is FREE! If a course is not listed check with Academic Services (309/298-1871). You may also contact departments about specific classes.

There are many Graduate Assistants in Academic Services who spend time tutoring students in their discipline. Don't hesitate to check it out and get help. Also, a new service being offered is Drop-In Tutoring in the Malpass Library. Here is a list of areas in which walk-in tutoring is offered as well as days and times. Please call for more details.

VARK is a questionnaire that provides users with a profile of their learning preferences. These preferences are about the ways that users want to take in and give out information. Visit the VARK website to find out more about how you learn best.

University Writing Center

The University Writing Center is a location where students can go to work on writing projects. Tutors are available to help you proofread and edit your papers as well as work with you on every stage in the writing process, from finding a topic, through invention, research, and drafting, to revising and editing.

Tutoring is also available in the Malpass Library.
