JOURNAL NAME CHANGES |
Journals are notorious for changing their names. |
For example, The International Journal of Disability, Development, and Education
|
used to be called, The Exceptional Child
|
Before politcal correctness, it was called Slow Learning Child
|
Each of these journal names will appear as separate entries in the Periodical Holdings List
|
For example, the current title The International Journal of Disability, Development, and Education will appear as follows:
|
| We will discuss the databases in a moment, but first look at the Holdings Information near the bottom of the graphic. It tells me that if I want to find print copies of this journal they will be located on the 3rd Floor under this title. It also tells me we have everything from volume 36 printed in 1989 to the present. If I need to find a print copy from before 1989 it will probably be under the former title, The Exceptional child. |

The Holdings Informaton tells me that the library has print copies of The Exceptional Child beginning with volume 23 in 1976, continuing through volume 35 in 1988. We already know that in 1989 the journal changed its name. To find these print copies I need to look for the title "Exceptional Child." I will look under the journals beginning with "E." If a journal name starts with "A" "AN" or "THE" we skip those words when searching. We also know that The Exceptional Child used to be called by the now "politically incorrect" Slow learning child. |

| This tells me that the library has print copies beginning with volume 1 in 1954, continuing through volume 22 in 1975. If I need a print copy of volumes one through twenty-two, I will look in the third floor stacks under the letter "S." We always skip the initial article "the." |
What About The Online Version? |
| If the journal is available online in one of our many databases those results will appear directly above the Holdings Information. In this example, The International Journal of Disability, Development, and Education and The Exceptional Child are available electronically. The oldest journal, The Slow Learning Child is only available in print. |

| Pay particular attention to the Full Text Start Date and the Full Text End Date. Different database vendors reach different agreements with the journal publishers and some will have more issues available. Although one database, Informaworld Journals claims to have full text available back to 1954 WIU only has online access dating back to 1997. Why? It was probably a manner of money and since we have the older issues in print why pay for access to articles that very few people, if anyone, will ever access. |
| You will also notice that some of the vendors have current issues while others don't carry "the most recent year." Why is this? That's because the people who sell these journals want us to buy the print copies in addition to whatever may be available online. Fortuntely, in this case two of the vendors carry current issues. If not, we have already determined that we have current issues on the 3rd floor. |
