ENG 180: all sections                                                       Spring, 2006
Paper #4                                                                           Ms. B. Braniff, Instructor

Paper #4 will be a summary in essay format of about 500-600 words (two to two and one-half pages, double spaced).   You will express the main ideas of the video we will watch in class, Influenza 1918:  The Worst Epidemic in American History (1998. PBS: American Experience Series).

You will watch and listen purposefully to the documentary, and you will take notes to help you with the paper you will write. Before watching the video, ask yourself questions like:  what made this influenza so bad? Why did so many people die?  How was it spread?  What did communities  and individuals do when the influenza broke out? As you watch it, listen carefully for transitional words and phrases which will signal main points. I will stop the video in time for us to have a little class discussion; we will finish watching it on Wednesday.

In addition to listening for main ideas, you should also listen for significant facts, figures, and quotes which you should note.  You will be required to make direct reference to specifics from the film. Try to capture as much of the important facts or phrases as you can, and I will show you in class how to incorporate those into your summary.

You will bring a beginning to end draft to class Monday, March 27 for a peer editing session; also bring your handbook on that date.  You will include the peer edited draft with the final draft when you hand in the paper.  The paper will be due in final form on Friday, March 31.

Welcome to class.  It is my intention to post all handouts on this site so you may have access to them outside of our class meetings.  I would welcome any suggestions for improving this site.
