Announcements

·        The final exam will be on Wednesday, 12/15/04 at 8:00-9:50 a.m. in class; and it will cover Sections 2.1-5.7. The exam will consist of 10 problems from or similar to the homework problems assigned between the beginning of the semester and 11/19/04; and it will be an open-book and closed-notes exam.

·        Exam 3 will be on Wednesday, 12/1/04; and it will cover Sections 4.6, 4.7, 4.9, 5.1-5.7.  This exam will be based on (consist of problems similar to) the homework problems assigned between 10/29/04 and 11/19/04.

·        Solution of homework set # 10 posted here.

·        Tenth homework set due on Friday, 11/19/04: See Homework page (Exercises assigned on 11/10/04 and 11/12/04.)

·        Ninth homework set due on Wednesday, 11/10/04: See Homework page (Exercises assigned on 11/3/04 and 11/5/04.)

·        Exam 2 will be on Wednesday, 10/27/04; and it will cover Sections 2.10-4.5.  This exam will be based on (consist of problems similar to) the homework problems assigned between 9/24/04 and 10/22/04.

·        Exam 1 will be on Wednesday, 9/22/04; and it will cover Sections 2.1-2.9.

50 points (out of 80) will be based on the homework; see Homework page (Exercises assigned on 8/23/04-9/15/04.) For this part, which will consist of three problems, you need a good understanding of the homework solutions which implicitly entails a good understanding of the material in the sections covered on the exam, including definitions, remarks, examples, lemmas, theorems, etc…

15 points will be based on a (part of or complete) proof of one of the following results proved in class: the theorems on pages 87, 96, 98 (the proof of the simplest cases of that theorem precedes the theorem), in addition to the Fundamental Lemma on page 87.

15 points will be based on identifying from a list 8 statements those which are true and those which are false, and correcting the ones that are false.
