Like the field of literature, the discipline of composition has been revolutionized by the recent emphasis on theory. In English 583 we'll read several theoretical texts by compositionists. These texts will be the core of our work together, to be supplemented by other books and essays to which our texts direct us.
You'll receive grades on the two papers and the exam. I'll also grade your participation (including your presentation) for a total of four grades.
We have a lot of work to squeeze into three weeks, so it will be necessary for all of us to pretty much commit every available moment to comp theory. After all, it is just for three weeks--plenty of time for a life later on.
We will meet in three-hour segments on Wednesday evening, Friday
evening, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon. Reading and writing
assignments are distributed as evenly as possible over our twelve
meetings. Use the schedule of assignments
to
plan
your time and work ahead if necessary.
