Shockwave Rider is the first novel in GH101 in large part because it's the earliest. It is largely assumed that Cyberpunk as a genre came into being with William Gibson's Neuromancer. There were, however, any number of precursors, among which Shockwave Rider is the most notable. (See also Dick, Do Androids Dream of Electronic Sheep; Piercy, Woman on the Edge of Time; Lem, The Cyberiad). The novel takes place in a degerate future dominated by computers and an all-powerful government. Nickie Hafflinger had been part of a government operation known as Tarnover. He escaped, and the book recounts his efforts to avoid capture. Nickie's evasive tactics include adopting successive new identities, some of which we see in the early sections of the novel.
