English 384, CMPOSITION FOR TEACHERS

Spring 1996
Bruce Leland
Western Illinois University

PURPOSE OF THE COURSE:

The purpose of the course is threefold: 1) to introduce some theories of composition which provide a basis for discussing pedagogy; 2) to consider a variety of techniques for teaching writing; 3) to practice the writing skills under discussion. The course is arranged in a sequential series of topics (What is Writing? How Do We Write? What Do Readers Look For? etc.). This sequencing is somewhat artificial, however; in practice, the course will, like writing, be more recursive than sequential. Your ideas, questions, and responses will help determine the direction we take at any moment.
