Searching for Videos at WIU Using WestCat

 

 

1.  To look for videos by exact title:

 

v      Type the title at the Quick Search screen.

v      Click on Title search at right.

v      Click on Search button.

 

2.  If you don’t know the exact title, but have other facts:

 

v      Go to Advanced search screen

v      First, limit search to video format:

 

§         Click on More Limits in bottom right hand of green area

§         Set limits to Primary Format = Films/Videos

§         Then click on Set Limits.

v      When back at Advanced Search screen, use appropriate search:

§         Any Words searches keyword; prefix a + on to each word of a multi-word search

§         Author Words searches actor, director, or writer name

§         Use Title Words if you know part of a title

§         Use Subject Words to search subject of video (if you know LC headings)

§         Use Note Words to search small print on video packaging

§         Or a combination of the above!

3.  To browse through titles in the order they appear on the shelf:

 

v      At Quick Search screen, choose Call Number search at right. 

v      Then type one of the following and click Search button to view that collection in shelf order:

§         For DVDs, type AVD

§         For VHS cassettes, type AVV

4.  To browse a list of our ‘fun’ movies:

 

v      Go to Quick Search page

v      Choose Subject at right, type feature films in box and click Search button.

v      To sort the list by title or date, drop down the Sort by box above and to the left of the results.

 

 

5.  To look up WIU Libraries’ film collections:

 

v      Go to Quick Search screen.

v      Type one of the following in quotes and click on Search button:

§         “WIU Gay Lesbian Film”

§         “WIU Holocaust Media”
