Eta Sigma Gamma, the National Professional Health Education Honorary, has
its purpose to elevate the standards, ideals, competence, and ethics of
professionally trained men and women in the discipline of health education.
The Greek letters Eta, Sigma, and Gamma represent the Greek equivalents
of the letters H. SC., the abbreviation of "Health Sciences."
Eta Sigma Gamma was established at the national level at Ball State University,
Muncie, IN, in 1967. The Pi Chapter at Western Illinois University was
founded on May 10, 1974...to further the professional competence and dedication
of individual members of the health science professions.
The symbol for Eta Sigma Gamma is a triangle surrounded by three joined
circles. The triangle is divided into 4 equilateral triangles: in the center
triangle is a lamp of learning; surrounding triangles contain an open book
representing teaching, a microscope signifying research and an outstretched
hand denoting service. These three elements are unified by the lamp of
learning, for through learning each is achieved.
The honorary is governed by the National Executive Committee. A national
Council of Delegates consists of one representative from each collegiate
chapter; meetings are held annually. Collegiate chapters are granted to
institutions of higher education that offer a degree program in school
health education and/or community/public health education.
As future health education professionals, chapter initiates share with
members the responsibility of maintaining the honor and integrity of Eta
Sigma Gamma. Initiates represent the future for the honorary; we must work
together to keep alive the Gamman spirit. |
