Welcome to the Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) Department of Western Illinois University. We have been involved in the educational and instructional uses of media and technology for almost 50 years.
The IDT Department at WIU is fairly unique among instructional technology departments since it offers both a B.S. and M.S. in IDT.I want to stress that our field is mostly about instruction and finding ways to make instruction more effective, efficient, and rewarding through technology. Instructional technology is really about the practical, hands-on application of educational psychology, child and adult learning theory, and cognitive science to support live-long learning.
Our program
offers a unique synthesis of psychology, education, computer science, information
systems, graphic design, and telecommunications to give undergraduate and graduate
students the applied skills and design approaches that prepare them for a wide
range of career opportunities. Over the years, our students have gone on to
successive careers in industry, higher education, and public education.
