KME Meeting
October 25, 2006

  • Attendance: Tara DeMay, Sarah Cane, Stephanie Heaton, Breanne Hoffman, Chris Barenz, Jennifer Newberg, Jonathan Doolin, Dennis Norton, Jivan Hawkinson, Kelly Avery, Carla Webb and Scott Mikos
  • President’s announcements:
    • We are in the process of being an official organization
  • Breanne’s announcements:
    • We will have to do fundraising in order to get our money because Greek societies do not get money.
  • Update on Guest speakers:
    • Sarah will talk to Dr. Kranjc and get details worked out
    • Dr. Kranjc has a friend who might speak for us
    • Jonathan would like to do a talk on special theory of relativity
  • Update on “Taking the Mystery Out of Math” Open House
    • It’s postponed to second semester because the commons was booked
    • We will have it on Feb. 3, 2007
    • We need to send letters to families before and after Christmas break
    • The location is the High School Commons
    • The time is still 1-4
    • Breanne will talk to sodexho about providing food
    • We will go to Wal-Mart, Hyvee, and the pizza places for sponsorships
      • We will put their ads in the programs
    • Breanne will work on business letters for sponsorships and programs
    • A list of possible activities:
      • Sports in math
      • logic
      • Number theory—Dr. Andreev has a lot of material for this
      • Paper Airplane contest—Dr. B has some books
      • Stock market simulation—Board game, possibly adjust this one
      • Sudoku contest—board games and books-many different levels
      • Platonic Solids—Sarah will do this one
      • Probability—possible black jack with the older kids
      • Set games
      • Pentaminoes
      • Logic (grid) puzzles
      • money
      • Show other calculating devices
      • different math careers/ 391 presentations
      • dot-to-dot coordinates
    • Prizes—possibly think of a way to reward those who participate in all the activities
  • T-shirts
    • Polos or T-shirts???
    • Brainstorm ideas—go towards a professional approach
