Lamda Allies Faculty Staff Group (LAFS)
Newsletter - Spring, 2000

Members of LAFS, the University Committee on Sexual Orientation, and BGLFA held a Sunday Brunch on January 30, 2000 at the Alumni house. Thanks and appreciation are extended to the excellent cooks. When the weather gets warmer, an outside event at the Alumni house might be fun.

Another "Chill and Chat" lunch is scheduled for Thursday, March 16 at noon in the Lincoln Room in the Union. Notify Martin Dupuis if you plan to attend so he can make reservations.

LAFS is one of the cosponsors for a keynote speaker for Awareness Week. On Wednesday, April 5 Reverend Gregory Dell from Chicago will be on campus to speak about his work as a Methodist Minister with gay and lesbian couples. LAFS is scheduling a luncheon in the Lincoln Room from 11:30 to 12:30 on Wednesday April 5 for Reverend Dell. Please join us for lunch and interesting conversations with Reverend Dell. He will also be speaking in several classes in the afternoon and then give a keynote address Wednesday evening which will be followed by a reception. The keynote is entitled: "Racism, Sexism, and Heterosexism: The Parallels and Distinctions". His program is only one of many activites scheduled for Awareness Week which will be April 2 through April 7. Keep a look out for advertisements about the events.

An end of the year social is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2000 from 4-7 pm at Beth and Kathy's home. Weather permitting, this will be a barbecue. Bring your own refreshments and a side dish to share.

A first year faculty member, Craig Rich from the Theater Department, directed the Pulitzer Prize winning play, "How I Learned to Drive" which was performed in Simpkins Theater on Feb 11 and 12. Incredibly, he had only three weeks to prepare, and the performance was terrific. Congratulations to Craig on his first production at Western.

In April, it will be time to elect new officers for LAFS. There are 3 positions to be filled: 2 co-chairs and secretary/treasurer. Contact Martin Dupuis (298-1261) or Beth Higgs (298-1372) for more information and to put your name on the ballot. In addition, we need 3 volunteers for committee chairs. The committees are Liaison, Social, and Programs. Together, these 6 officers constitute the executive committee of LAFS. Please consider lending a hand. We need your input and energy.

We also need a little money! We know, who doesn't. We are raising funds for Reverend Dell's visit and for the year end barbecue. In addition, we would like to have some flyers printed up for the new faculty orientation. We haven't been too serious about collecting the $15 dues for membership, but know that we have a need for some cash, please send your check to Bill McFarland, HH 74. An account has been established for LAFS with the university.
