Academic Services
Western accepts a limited number of students through the Academic
Services program who show academic potential based on several different
criteria, but who do not meet regular admission standards. Pending graduation from a state recognized high school, a student must have a minimum ACT score of 16 AND a 2.20 cumulative GPA (4.00 = A) to be considered. Admission decisions are reached after a review of high school transcripts,
references, student letter of interest, assessments in math and
English, and a student interview.
Accepted students sign a contract which stipulates that they will
meet regularly with an advisor and participate in tutoring, refrain
from pledging a Greek organization during their freshmen year, and
use the other resources available to them as Western students. Tutoring
support is provided and academic progress is monitored closely by
an advisor. Academic Services students are accepted on academic
warning for their first semester. Students remain in the program
until they have completed 27 semester hours, have achieved at least
a C average in their course work, and have declared a major field
of study. This is typically two semesters (freshman year).
The General Education Handbook provides course descriptions for courses typically taken by first semester freshmen.
