Course Description: English 280, the WIU Writing Program’s second required writing course, seeks to build upon the accomplishments of English 180 and to improve student writing in areas of analysis, argumentation, and research. College Composition II will be useful in both personal and academic writing.

Course Requirements:
*   4 Major Papers
      *     Essay 1 (10%) Informational
      *     Essay 2 (30%) Argumentation
      *     Essay 3 (20%) Analysis
      *     Essay 4 (10%) Revision
      *     Final Exam (5%)
*Small Writing Projects (10%) Prospectus for Essay 2, Prospectus for Essay 3, and various short essays
*In-Class Work & Homework (5%) Including but not limited to assignments, activities, journals, etc.
*Workshopping (5%) Written and oral feedback
*Attendance and Participation (5%)

Grading Procedure: All papers are to be handed in to me with a coversheet, revised drafts, and working notes during the class period in which they are due. Late work is unacceptable. Do not arrive in class on the day your essay is due and expect to print your essay. Have this task completed before you attend the scheduled class meeting. Should you expect to find that you are unable to meet the essay assignment deadlines, I will accept major paper assignments up to 2 days late, but keep in mind, I will drop your major essay grade for late work one half (1/2) letter grade per day late. For example, if your essay is due on Monday and you turn it in on Tuesday, your paper is one day late and will drop one half letter grade (B- to C+). No work will be accepted beyond the two day period. If you are experiencing difficulties, need assistance, or extenuating circumstances arise, contact me before your essay is due.

Grading Scale:
I use a ten point grade scale:
A = 10C+ = 5
A- = 9C = 4
B+ = 8C- = 3
B = 7D = 2
B- = 6F = 1

Final Grades:
A = 90-100%C = 70-79%
B = 80-89%U/F = 69% & below

Extra Credit: A maximum of 20 points in extra credit work may be accumulated throughout the semester (and applies to your In-Class Work & Homework grade). Each extra credit item is worth a total of 5 points, and you must see me for the specific requirements that must be met for each. Extra credit may be earned by completing one or more of the following:
*Visit the University Writing Center located in Simpkins Hall room 341. (up to 2)
*Summaries and analyses of written works (up to 2 and limited to works covered in class)
*Respond to a newspaper, journal, or magazine article by writing a letter to the editor or countering the author’s argument (up to 2)
*Attend and English Department Grammar Workshop and write a summary/analysis of its contents. (1)
*Biography of one of the authors used in class (1)
*Note: You may be required to visit the Writing Center and/or to attend a Grammar Workshop. These required sessions do not count toward your total extra credit points.

Attendance Policy: Attendance is required, and participation is essential. Six absences are allowed throughout the semester for any reason. Any absences beyond the allowed amount will result in a lowering of your overall grade by one full letter grade. If you are absent more than EIGHT (8) times, English 280 policy requires that you automatically fail this course (unless proper documentation can be supplied to the instructor).
