ANALYSIS OF EXPERIENCE
Developmental Skills
As a resident assistant, skills such as counseling, peer
discipline, time management, and responsibility were strengthened. The
various levels of tutoring and student teaching increased an understanding of the developmental stages of children and promoted an ability to communicate with and help develop the skills of students at their individual levels.
Organizational Skills
Being a resident assistant required establishing and coordinating programs for the residents. As a teacher, I initiated innovative exercises into the English program that helped students enjoy learning and built the Spanish program to 55% of the stude
nt body, emphasizing a mixture of higher learning and cultural enjoyment.
Presentation Skills
The various tutorial programs and TA programs enhanced the manner of presentation of material focusing on specific audiences. Growing up with a severely mentally handicapped brother has fostered patience and the insight to place difficult concepts at
a level the audience can understand. Student teaching and classroom teaching has helped in researching, organizing material in a functional order and presenting it in an interesting, positive manner. I prefer discussion as a form of presentation , and i
n Spanish, I prefer to teach so that the students may speak, read, and write the language. Actual classroom experience has provided an outlet for skills in meeting the counseling needs of students and using these skills to make the students desire to lea
rn, thus teaching them to initiate their own growth.
