Center for Social Studies Education
The Social Studies Center houses a collection of Law-Related Education materials which are utilized by students in their course work. In the past three years the Center has become home to a collection of American History resources provided under a U.S. History Education Grant entitled Learning Our Past, Securing Our Future: An Enduring Partnership in Excellence. In addition, students in both undergraduate methods courses, SSED 365 Teaching Our Heritage and SSED 495 Teaching With a Global Perspective, utilize the Center to complete assignments in our standards-based program related to geographic skills, economic concepts, historical inquiry, Native Americans, global issues and WebQuest creation.
Through the use of available techonology the center is used each semester for microteaching in both methods classes. The Center is also home to the publications of the Illinois Council for the Social Studies. Social Studies Center staff also maintains a Web Site for the Jeff Leibovitz Special Collection of Holocaust Education materials. Our newest addition is a traveling resource trunk on Illinois Indians, which was designed for grades 3-5. It is available to elementary schools in McDonough County.
