Student Perceptions
In Fall 2006, 424 (22.8%) of the 1,860 new freshmen enrolled in FYE courses participated in the online survey opportunity to evaluate the program. Student survey results indicate that the FYE program continues to moving upward image improve in its efforts to help students experience a positive introduction to college life.

FYE has 12 primary goals and progress was made in 11 of them compared with Fall 2005 student responses.

7.3% improvement - Western's FYE program helps me develop effective study skills.
6.9% improvement - Western's FYE program helps me appreciate that learning extends beyond the classroom.
6.0% improvement - Western's FYE program helps me manage the transition from high school to college.
6.0% improvement - Western's FYE program helps me fit into the WIU community.
5.6% improvement - Western's FYE program enables me to respect the views of others.
5.6% improvement - Western's FYE program has a positive impact on my relationship with fellow students.
5.2% improvement - Western's FYE program has a positive impact on my view of the value of lifelong learning.
4.7% improvement - Western's FYE program has helped me become more successful in my first year of college.
3.8% improvement - Western's FYE program helps me learn where to go for help when I need it.
3.3% improvement - Western's FYE program has a positive impact on my relationship with faculty members.
0.6% decline - Western's FYE program encourages me to become involved in campus activities.

In addition, more freshmen read the common summer reading (Class Matters), and more freshmen reported to integration of the book into their FYE classes. Leading the way in improvement success, residence hall programming improved more than 20.1%, and peer mentor involvement in FYE classes increased 16.2%. Improvements were also seen in 19 of the other 25 compared measures.

Faculty Perceptions
For Fall 2006, 55 (68.8%) of the 80 faculty members teaching FYE courses also participated in a faculty survey of the FYE program.

Faculty perceived improvement in all 9 of the FYE overall program goals they evaluated, with the most significant improvement being the 16.0% increase they reported in the program's ability to help students become more successful in their first year of college.

In addition, faculty reported double digit improvements in 5 other assessment factors. Leading the way was the 16.2% increase in faculty feeling that out-of-class activities helped them get to know their students better, a 13.0% increase in faculty's ability to incorporate the common reading into their courses, and a 12.9% sense of being more aware of the expectations of the FYE program as it entered its second year.
