Teaching Duties
KIN 550, Professional Workshop, Resistance Training, 3 sh.
    Purpose: To gain an understanding and application of resistance training principles and theory.
    The focus is on combining current theories of training with hands-on experience.
KIN 550, Professional Workshop, Stress Management and Relaxation, 3 sh.
    Purpose: To gain an understanding and application of stress management principles and theory.
    The focus is on combining current theories of training with hands-on experience.
KIN 447, Advanced Training Principles, 2 sh., developed in 2000.
    Purpose:  To learn the techniques and scientific basis of advanced strength and conditioning.
    Program design, preparation and progressions of conditioning, as well as alternative
    methods for high intensity conditioning will be addressed.
KIN 347, Leadership in Resistance Training, 2 sh.
    Purpose:  To gain an understanding of the various terms, concepts, principles, physiological benefits,
    and other aspects of strength training and program design.
KIN 364, History of Physical Education and Sport, 2 sh.
    Purpose: A study of the origins of sport and physical education with emphasis on how these events impact
    our world today.
KIN 325, Health Related Fitness, Strength and Conditioning Section.
    Purpose:  To gain an understanding of the various terms, concepts, principles, physiological benefits,
    and other aspects of strength training and program design as they apply to the prepubescent and adolescent.
KIN 319, Leadership in Stress Management and Relaxation, 2 sh., developed in 2002.
    Purpose:  To learn the interactions between stress and illness, exercise, and psychophysiology, as
    well as the skills of stress management and relaxation.  The ability to conduct short seminars on
    various related topics.
KIN 300, Fitness for Older Adults and Target Populations, 2 sh.
     Purpose:  Designed to acquaint students with activities and how to design activity programs for
    mature adults.  Activities and programs appropriate for various age groups, illnesses, and various
    target popluations are presented.
KIN 248, Advanced Strength Training, 1 sh., developed in 2000.
    Purpose:  To gain an understanding of advanced scientific principles, concepts, physiological benefits,
    muscle recruitment, and other aspects of strength training and program design.
KIN 247, Power Training, 1 sh., developed in 1996.
    Purpose:  To gain an understanding of core training, plyometric training and olympic style lifting such
    as the snatch, clean, and jerk movements.  Advanced power training techniques and program design
    will be discussed.
KIN 190, Conditioning and Weight Training for LEJA majors
    Purpose: To understand the skills, principles, reasons, and consequences of fitness and related topics as it
    impacts law enforcement officers who are wishing to pass the Illinois State "P.O.W.E.R." test.
KIN 149, Stress Management and Relaxation, 1 sh.
    Purpose:  To understand the causes and affects of stress on the body and learn to manage stress
    using various relaxation techniques

Book publications
Waller, M.A. and Piper, T.J.  "Alternative Training Methods" (2004), first printing (2006) second printing
        A book that covers various strongman, odd lift, and unique implement training for those in search of
         unorthodox training for unusual results.  The book starts with explanations of both mental and physical
        training concepts.  Technique description for farmers walks, stone lifting, and sand bag training are only
        a few of the many methods covered in this book.
Piper, T.J. and Waller, M.A. "Power Training" (2008)
        A comprehensive guide for developing explosive strength.  This book extensively covers plyometric and
        weighlifting exercises in a straightforward manner.  Numerous helpful tables, charts, graphs, and appendices
        are included in this text.

Journal information for all scholarly activities
Strength and Conditioning Journal is published by the National Strength and Conditioning Association.
It is the professional journal for strength coaches, personal trainers, physical therapists, athletic trainers,
and other health professionals working in the strength and conditioning field. The journals mission is to
publish articles that report both the practical applications of research findings and the knowledge gained
by experienced professionals.

International Journal of Athletic Therapy and Training (IJATT).  IJATT publishes reports pertaining to clinical
applications of research findings, procedures that have been found effective for the prevention and treatment of
sports-related injuries, and professional practice issues.

NATA News is published by the National Athletic Trainers' Association.  It is a peer reviewed practical
journal designed to enhance communication among professionals interested in the quality of health care
for the physically active through education and research in prevention, evaluation, management, and
rehabilitation of injuries.

Strategies is a  peer reviewed professional magazine that offers practical how-to articles for
sport and physical education professionals at all levels. Strategies is published by the American Alliance
for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.

Athletic Therapy Today is the professional journal of certified athletic trainers and athletic therapists.  This
peer reviewed journal provides information related professional practice issues, sports health-care techniques,
and practical applications of current research.

The American Journal of Health and Fitness is published by the National Aerobics and Fitness
Trainers Association. It is a professional peer reviewed Internet-based journal dedicated to the
working professional for the purpose of translating scientific knowledge into potential application.

MILO: A Journal for Serious Strength Athletes is published by IronMind Enterprises under the leadership of
Randall Strossen, PhD.  This journal publishes articles, reviews, poems, biographies related to numerous strength
sports including but not limited to: weightlifting, powerlifting, strongman, highland games, stone lifting,
arm/wrist wrestling, etc.

Powerlifting USA is a popular magazine which publishes various articles related to promoting and training
for the sport of  powerlifting and other strength sports.
