SELECTED ERIC SEARCHES

The keyword search below retrieves 93332+ records. Way too many.

This graphic displays a keyword search using the term, "reading."

Using "reading" as a subject reduces the number by one third, to 65,685. Better, but still too many.

This search is the same as the one above, using "reading" as a search term. However, the search delimiter has been set to "subject." This reduces the number of results by one third.

Adding Elementary Education reduces the number to 13,960.

Restricting the search to items only in WIU's library, reduces the number to 2047. Note: this restriction also eliminates all ERIC Documents--despite the fact that we have ERIC Documents in the library.

Adding "girls" as a keyword reduces the number to 5--too few.

Removing the WIU restriction brings the number back up to 20. That's decent.

A little tweaking using the Expert screen brings the number up to 33. Don't be afraid of the Expert screen. It's pretty easy to figure out.

This graphic displays the use of the expert search area. The search is su: reading and (su="elementary education") and kw: (girl* or females) and yr: 1997-2002 The difference here is that females has been added to the mix. The * after girl signifies truncation.

A bit more tweaking, adding "female" and "gender" to the search and restricting the search to only journal articles gives us 30 journal articles. That's perfect. If we restricted the search to ERIC Documents, we'd get 72 documents.
