Compliance/Policy

Password Changes

When was the last time you changed your password? The answer could be anywhere from 30 days to never depending on the system. That is about to change as the University has approved a comprehensive password policy that takes effect August 2009. See the full text of the password policy for details. See here for details on the password policy.

Wireless Authentication

You may have noticed while connecting to the WIU network over wireless that there is a new SSID named “WIU SECURE” in addition to the standard SSID “WIU WIRELESS”. The purpose of the new SSID is to provide a secure connection to WIU resources over wireless. You are encouraged to test connecting to the new secure wireless network using your ECOM id and password as authentication.

The original non-authenticated SSID will remain unaltered through the current academic year. Over the summer the “WIU WIRELESS” SSID will be converted to provide only limited Internet access. Requiring you to do nothing if you only use wireless for Internet access but requiring you to begin using the “WIU SECURE” SSID along with your ECOM id and password to access WIU resources over wireless. See here for details on the wireless policy.

Sensitive Data Cleanup Efforts

University Technology and its technology partners (ESS, Library, etc.) have instituted programs to scan & reimage infected computers, reimage computers prior to transferring between users, scanning of data prior to moving between computers, DOD approved wiping of computers prior to state approved disposal and a baseline deployment of security patches.

Over the summer and continuing into the fall University Technology and its technology partners will embark on a program to clean University owned computers of sensitive data such as SSNs and credit cards. Details are still being worked out but the focus over the summer will be on administrative areas before attention is turned to academic areas in the fall. See here for details on the SSN policy.
