Posted December 17, 2009

University Technology will be upgrading Western's Zimbra Collaboration Suite from version 5.0.18 to version 6.0.4 on January 8, 2010.

This upgrade is expected to take about 12 hours, making the Zimbra system unavailable from 6:30 p.m. January 8 until approximately 7:00 a.m. on January 9.

While there will be several enhancements to the functionality and interface of Zimbra 6, the system will still have the same familiar look and feel.

Email Enhancements

  • read receipt imageRead receipts. Zimbra users have the option to enable/disable read receipts. If enabled, this feature allows the sender to verify if his/her email was read by the recipient. This feature can be set up in the Preferences Mail folder.
  • tabbed email compose imageTabbed Email Compose. This feature enables multi-tasking by allowing users to compose emails in separate tabs and also switch from composing emails to view/search other emails, access calendar, or other collaboration features.
  • 3-pane reading view image3-pane Reading View. An option to view the inbox in three vertical panes where the reading pane is on the right. The default view has the reading pane at the bottom of the web client. This view option is enabled from the View link on the mail toolbar.

  • An easier to use Preferences interface.
  • Zimbra Social. Users can add Twitter and Facebook accounts directly within the Zimbra interface.

Third-Party E-mail Client Support

After the upgrade to Zimbra 6, all users of third-party clients (such as Microsoft Outlook and Mac OS X Mail) must change their Zimbra server to "zimbra.wiu.edu".

Mobile Device Support

In general, PDAs and Smart Phones are supported if they have WiFi or Broadband access and support Microsoft Exchange. This includes the iPhone, iPod Touch, Windows Mobile and Android devices. However, users are responsible for wireless communication charges billed by their provider. After the upgrade to Zimbra 6, all users of mobile devices must change their Zimbra server to "zimbra.wiu.edu".

Configuring Other Devices or Clients to Connect to Zimbra

Other devices or clients may be able to connect to Zimbra with limited functionality. Below is a list of the most common pieces of information necessary to configure such devices or clients.

  • Mail type: IMAP
  • Incoming Server: zimbra.wiu.edu
  • Username: <your ECom ID>
  • Password: <your ECom password>
  • Outgoing Server: smtp.wiu.edu

It is possible that you will need to check an option for "SSL" or "Secure certificates" to use Authentication. You should use your ECom user name and password to configure this if necessary.

There are many devices and clients that can connect to Zimbra. Each one may use slightly different terminology for their configuration. University Technology cannot guarantee that any client will work properly with Zimbra or that these are the only configuration settings necessary to successfully complete the setup.

If you are trying to configure a device such as a smart phone or BlackBerry you may need to contact your provider to complete the configuration.
