SURS Return to Work

Rehiring Retirees/Affected Annuitants

The SURS "Return to Work" legislation (40 ILCS 5/15-139.5) became effective in  August 2013 . Provisions of that Act will impose substantial financial penalties on universities that employ State Universities Retirement System (SURS) annuitants for more than 18 weeks with eligible earnings during a single Academic Year (9/1/year to 8/31/next year) of more than 40 percent of their highest annual rate of earnings prior to retirement. The statute does not prohibit hiring of SURS retirees/annuitants.
