Employee Spotlight Robert O'Bear

Robert O'Bear

Accountant I
Accounting Office

"It is what it is."

Bob works in the Accounting Office as an Accountant I. Bob serves as the Accounts Payable Supervisor overseeing daily payables, vendor payments, and is responsible for reviewing each of these areas. Bob began at Western Illinois University when the Board of Governors (BOG) was dissolved. Bob worked for the BOG at the time of the governing body dissolution. He was reassigned to WIU’s Accounting Office. He has also worked in the Financial Accounting area during his tenure here.

It’s the people and the challenges that Bob loves most about his job. He adds, “I like trying to solve the problems that departments may have and help them through the difficulties. Western is a great place to work. You do have to be able to accept things that you can’t control, then step in and do what you need to do to get the job done!”

Bob also serves as the current Treasurer on the Civil Service Employees Council and is a Representative for Group 1 employees. Bob shared, “I have really enjoyed working on the CS Council. It is so worth seeing employees come to the luncheons/fundraisers and enjoy themselves and each other. The luncheons provide opportunities for employees to have fun and get to know employees in other departments across both campuses.”

Bob credits Cheryl Webster as someone that has helped him in his career here at Western. She has been Bob’s supervisor for all but 2-3 years of his 22 years here. He elaborated, “She has been very helpful-very understanding and willing to train me.”

Some of the events that Bob enjoys attending at WIU include the 4th of July Fireworks display, the theatre performances, and watching Higgins Hall implosion! Bob enjoys camping and boating in his free time. He also has a 5-acre yard so much of his time is spent mowing in the summer!

HR salutes Robert O'Bear as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
