Scheduling & Event Services–University Union

"If at first you don't succeed, try try again."
―I say this to my kids A LOT!

Gayle Heller began her career at Western Illinois University in May 2011 as a Space Administrator I in the University Union. She has progressively promoted to her current position. Gayle is responsible for scheduling meeting spaces in Western Hall, Hanson Field, Sherman Hall, and outdoor venues. She submits work orders for events, works with the public to plan events, and also with many student organizations. Gayle came to WIU through Sodexo where she worked for 12 years.

Getting to work with so many types of people is one of the highlights of Gayle’s job! She shared, “The job is never the same. I enjoy using patrons’ ideas to help them make their events a success.” Gayle added, “Western is a good place to work. There are many positive attitudes here. Our goal is to make our students feel good and I think we do a good job of that!”

One of Gayle’s most memorable experiences was when she received the Student Services Civil Service Employee of the Month Award. She shared, “This came as a shock to me! It felt good! I had just started my job and my supervisor had left on family leave for three months. It was a challenging time; I had to be the supervisor for that period of time.”

Gayle credits Ashley Katz with helping her in her position. “Ashley took a chance on me when she was leaving. She has helped me to grow and allowed me to make decisions and I learned to delegate from her. She gave me the confidence I needed to succeed. She is always good to help whenever she is needed.”

Whenever Gayle is not at work you can always find her spending time with her husband and three kids. MOST of that time is spent at South Fulton Rebels sporting and music events! Gayle also likes to work out to stay healthy!

HR salutes Gayle Heller as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
