Veteran's Resource Center
"You did then what you knew how to do. And when you knew better, you did better." —Maya Angelou
Crystal works as a Clerk in the Veteran's Resource Center located in the Wright Residence. She began her career at Western Illinois University in January 2013. Crystal's responsibilities include: assisting incoming Veteran, National Guard, and Reserve students to navigate the many processes of becoming acclimated to WIU; she helps them with their benefits, to find housing either off-campus or refers them to University Housing and Dining Services for on-campus options; assists them with the Financial Aid application process; and helps them obtain any resources they may need. Another important aspect of Crystal's job is to help provide programming for our Veteran Students. The programs help Veteran Students to get to know each other so they have a support system at Western. When asked what she would share to prospective employees about working at Western, Crystal shared, "It's a huge community here, so many people you get to meet and know. There is a lot of opportunity for involvement here in so many areas. I also appreciate the ability to take classes." One of Crystal's most memorable experiences was working on the employment seminar. "I enjoyed helping to plan the program and work with outside individuals. I especially enjoy being able to use my graphic design skills for the promotional flyers/posters. I felt it was a big accomplishment to work on this program." Crystal's WIU journey began with graduating from Western. "I loved my Art Department and photography classes, so I called to find out about the testing, and I really liked the tests. It's a long process, so it's important to start early, before you want to be employed here." When she isn't working at the Veteran's Resource Center, Crystal enjoys attending the International Bazaar, any events to take her son to—Band Camp is a favorite, we enjoy the Rock, Gem, & Mineral Show, and riding bikes around campus in the summer. I love to take art classes, and eat at the Knoblauch Café! Crystal enjoys gardening in her spare time, but admits, "I kill everything I try to grow!" Crystal is very talented in the art, design, and photography areas. She would like to own her own business in these areas someday.
HR salutes Crystal Kepple as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
