Connie Gentes

Collection Assistant Manager
Billing & Receivables

Connie works in the Billing & Receivables Dept. as a Collection Assistant Manager. Connie began her career at WIU in October 2000, as a Secretary III in the Physical Plant. She has progressively promoted to her current position. Connie's primary responsibilities include working with the Federal Perkins Loans and Third Party Billing. She works with the borrowers from the award to final payments on the students' accounts. Her favorite part of her job is the interaction she has with students. "We are a university, and in some way we all help teach our students, even though I'm not a professor. I do my best to help them understand the financial side and make them aware about taking on debt." Connie's advice to prospective employees is to "Come out and apply! The WIU family is awesome! There is a community of students and coworkers outside of my job too. There are many activities and opportunities to participate in…from the Rec Center classes, to athletic events, to academic classes." For Connie, her most memorable experiences are those where she has connected to students or their families and the students have successfully graduated and thanked her. "THAT is what it is all about for me!" Connie shares that the academic resources she has available at her fingertips is important. "I am currently working on my Master's Degree and I'm taking many Public Administration courses. They help me a great deal with my job at WIU." Connie's WIU journey involved herself and her family, with four young boys, moving from the Eastern Illinois area to this area in 1998. She applied at Western and her first job was a Secretary III at the Physical Plant. She chuckles, "We no longer have Secretaries OR the Physical Plant…both have new names!" When asked what her favorite thing to do here on campus might be, she replies, "My favorite thing to do is to walk around campus at noon. We have so much beauty in our landscape and architecture that I just love to walk around and admire the trees, buildings, and landscape. It's very peaceful to me!" When Connie isn't working on the B & R team, you will find her working to complete her Master's Degree, studying in the library, writing and reading. She also enjoys spending any time she can with her four boys and her 2-year-old grandson.

HR salutes Connie Gentes as one of our many committed Civil Service employees at WIU!
