Web Alias Request
A web site can have more than one web address (URL) associated with it
through the use of a web alias. A web alias functions
as a shortcut to your web site.
Web aliases are only available for departments and officially
recognized University organizations. They are not available for individuals.
Example
A campus organization, the Rocky Jazz Club, has created a web site. The
current web address is www.wiu.edu/users/rjc. The organization
requests the alias www.wiu.edu/RockyJazz. Not only is
the alias shorter, but it is also more descriptive. A site visitor can
use either web address to access the web site.
Advantages of Web Aliases
- Shorter than actual web address so it is easier to remember.
- Because it is shorter, the web alias works well in marketing material
such as brochures.
- An alias can be a more descriptive web address.
- If the real web address changes, the alias can be redirected to the
new account. A web alias address is included in promotional materials,
there will be no chance visitors will find an outdated web site.
- The web alias address can be part of any page a visitor bookmarks
if relative links are used when creating the web site (information
about relative links is available at webmonkey.com)
