Juneteenth Labor Lecture: Dr. Essie Rutledge, Ph.D., "Freedom Not Yet Achieved: A Time For Celebration and Reflection"
Time: 5:00 PM
Location: Macomb City Hall Community Room
Description: Macomb, IL June 13, 2019: At 5pm on Wednesday, June 19, Dr. Essie Rutledge, professor emeritus of sociology at WIU, will speak at the Community Room in Macomb City Hall for the second Labor Lecture hosted by the McDonough County Democratic Women’s Labor Committee. Dr. Rutledge will present a participatory discussion entitled "Freedom Not Yet Achieved: A Time for Celebration and Reflection."

The discussion will focus on the experience of African American workers in Macomb, especially on this day of commemoration.

Dr. Rutledge has been part of Macomb’s community since 1976, when she became the chair of the African American Studies department at WIU. In that time, she has volunteered in the community through various organizations, and especially as a leader in the Macomb Equal Opportunity and Fair Housing Commission.

“Having Dr. Rutledge speak is an honor,” says Labor Committee Chair Emiliano Vera. “She represents the best of what unions can do for people by standing up for all workers without a voice. She has been there time and time again for our community, for union and non union workers, and always speaking up for women and people of color.”

June 19, known simply as Juneteenth, celebrates the liberation of the last enslaved people by the Union army and therefore marks the end of slavery in the United States.

The event is free, open to the public and all are invited. Light refreshments will be provided.
