This compelling drama is based on the true story of a young German Jew who survives the Holocaust by masquerading as an ethnic German. Solomon Perel (Marco Hofschneider), the son of a Jewish shoe salesman, is growing up in Germany during the rise of Adolf Hit- ler and the Nazis, but moves to Lodz, Poland with his family in 1935 for safety. He is separated from his family during the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, which marks the beginning of his remarkable odyssey. Solly survives the war and the Holocaust through a variety of unusual situations and circumstances. This film powerfully illustrates the strange events that shaped Solomon Perel's destiny and the full force of his terror and sorrow. - The film won the golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1992.
