José "Zeca" Lacerda is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in contemporary music, specializing in music performance at Bowling Green State University. He is also a teaching assistant for the percussion studio under the direction of Roger Schupp.

As an advocate of new music, Zeca has worked alongside composers such as Steve Reich, John L. Adams, Elliott Sharp, Jeff Herriott, Christian Wolff, Bob Becker, and Stuart Saunders
Smith, having premiered works by the latter four. Zeca has also worked with prominent artists such as Katarzyna Micka, Michael Burritt, Steven Schick, Robert Van Sice, Daniel Druckman, Collin Currie, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. In Brazil, he has performed with some of the country’s premier orchestras, such as the Brazilian Symphony Orchestra and the Petrobrás Symphony Orchestra.

A native of Santa Catarina, Brazil, Zeca earned a bachelor’s degree in music performance from Universidade Federal de Santa Maria. He also has a master’s degree from the University of Miami, where he studied with Svet Stoyanov and Matthew Strauss. A published artist, Zeca has released an album of contemporary music for solo vibraphone, through Soundset Recordings, and has published an article through the Percussive Notes magazine (issue of November, 2012) Awards received include the Percussive Arts Society “Friends of Victor Gonzales” Scholarship in 2008, and
the Zildjian Scholarship in 2010.
