Vishnu Springs Open House
Time: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Location: Vishnu Springs, IL
Description: There will be an open house at Vishnu Springs on Sunday, October 21st, 2018 from 10 A.M. to 3 P.M. This is sponsored by both the Friends of Vishnu and the WIU University Archives.

The town of Vishnu Springs, located west of Tennessee, IL, was founded around 1880s, originally as a health retreat/spa. The town reportedly hosted as many as 3,000 visitors, each year, and contained a hotel, restaurant, blacksmith shop, fishing pond, race track and a school. By the 1920s, the town was defunct and remained so despite intermittent efforts at revival. The property was briefly a commune in the 1970s and was once again inhabited in the 1970s, but abandoned in the 80s. It has been uninhabited since it was abandoned in 1980. The only remaining structure -- though uninhabitable -- is the Capitol Hotel. The property remains off-limits to visitors.

For more information on the history of Vishnu Springs, visit the Friends of Vishnu at vishnusprings.org.

There will be a short talk on the history of Vishnu Springs at 1.

The open house will be weather permitting, due to safety concerns.
.
To get to Vishnu, take the Blandinsville / Tennessee Blacktop (County Road E 350th St.) either North from US Rt 136 out of Tennessee, or South from Il. Rt. 9, East of Blandinsville. To N1100th Road. At N1100th Rd. turn WEST. Follow that road West for three (3) miles until the road turns South. You will see the signs for the Ira and Reatha T. Post Wildlife Sanctuary (Vishnu) at the next curve. There will also be signs at N1100th Rd. to help direct you.

We suggest you wear weather appropriate clothes, and sturdy shoes, as there is a substantial hill and none-too-smooth road to walk. We hope to see you there!

Again, the open house is contingent on good weather, due to safety.
